The 2025 Mazda CX-70 promises style, performance, and practicality for modern families. But how does it hold up on a 4,000-mile family road trip through the American Southwest?
MotorTrend executive producer Brent Baer put it to the test, traveling with his wife and two daughters from California to New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, and Nevada. With a Jeep Grand Cherokee L as his daily driver, Baer offers valuable insights into how the CX-70 fares in the real world.
Cargo Space – Big, But Not Perfect
The CX-70’s generous cargo area swallowed an impressive packing list:
-
Two full-size suitcases
-
Fishing poles
-
Cooler
-
Stroller
-
Two rollable bed mats
-
Two Disco-O-Bed kid cots (bunk set)
-
And more camping and travel gear
Baer noted the deep cargo floor made packing easier, but the high load floor limited vertical space. The curved tailgate gave just enough clearance for last-minute items.
Using the optional tow hitch, he mounted a Yakima bike rack carrying one adult mountain bike and two children’s bikes.
Interior Comfort – Roomy, But Lacking in Storage Solutions
While the CX-70 shares its platform with the three-row CX-90, its five-seat layout doesn’t translate into exceptional passenger space.
Baer’s take:
-
Legroom – Fine for long drives.
-
Width – Narrower second row made fitting a third passenger between two car seats uncomfortable.
-
Storage – Shallow center console, small door pockets, and limited cubbies meant essentials like snacks and wipes had no dedicated spot.
-
Cupholders – Too small for modern refillable bottles like Baer’s 24 oz Owala.
On the Road – Refined Ride, But Flawed Transmission
The inline-six engine impressed with smooth power and quiet cruising, but the 8-speed automatic transmission stumbled at low speeds:
-
Clunky shifts between first, second, and third gear under 30 mph
-
Heavy steering that caused driver fatigue over long hours
One saving grace: Steering Assist worked flawlessly on highways, requiring only a light touch to stay engaged. And on winding mountain roads, the CX-70 shined with agile handling and responsive performance.
Unexpected Twist – The Spare Tire Surprise
Baer’s trip took a turn when a slow leak left the rear tire flat.
The surprise? Mazda’s spare tire warning says it shouldn’t be used on the rear axle. Instead, the manual instructs swapping a front tire to the back, placing the spare on the front.
Pressed for time, Baer mounted the spare on the rear and drove 2 miles to a shop without issue — but it’s a quirk worth noting for future buyers.
Verdict – Stylish, Capable, But Not Without Flaws
The 2025 Mazda CX-70 delivers a refined ride, strong cargo flexibility, and spirited driving dynamics. However, tight second-row width, limited storage, and transmission quirks could frustrate road trip-loving families.
For style-conscious buyers who value driving enjoyment and a premium cabin feel, the CX-70 is a compelling choice — just make sure your water bottles fit.
